China Urges Obama to Cancel Planned Dalai Lama Meeting

China is urging the US government to cancel plans for President Barack Obama to meet next week with Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu issued a statement Friday, urging the United States to, in his words, “immediately withdraw” plans for a meeting between President Obama and the Dalai Lama.

Ma indicated that the meeting could further hurt Sino-American relations, which are already strained because of a U.S. arms sale to Taiwan, disagreements over China’s currency exchange rate and U.S. concerns over Chinese internet censorship.

Zhu Weiqun, the vice-minister of the Chinese Communist Party’s United Front Work Department, which handles Tibet issues, recently made the same point.

Alicia Keys To Join Jay-Z Onstage For Duet At 2010 BRIT Awards

OK! Magazine: ALICIA Keys will perform with Jay-Z at the BRIT Awards next week.

Empire State of Mind singer Alicia Keys will take to the stage next Tuesday alongside rapper Jay-Z at the BRIT Awards, to perform the smash single together.

Ged Doherty of the BRITs Committee said: “Alicia is a fantastic addition to the show. I can’t wait to see her and Jay-Z perform one of the biggest songs of the year.”

Other performers to appear at the show include Lady GaGa, Jay-Z, Cheryl Cole, Lily Allen, Kasabian, JLS and Robbie Williams.

There will also be a one off collaboration between rapper Dizzee Rascal and Florence and the Machine onstage.

Alicia will be celebrating at the event, after her latest album The Element of Freedom reached the UK number one slot on Monday – showing her recent experiments with her trademark sound have paid off.

Describing how the title reflects the album, she recently said: “It is a different record for me. I always have been the type of person who wants to be able to try new things with every creative thing I do.

“I want to do something new. I don’t ever want to feel I’m boxed in, in any way. So that’s definitely one of the reasons I called the album The Element of Freedom. I just really felt like that came through very clearly on all the songs.”

The BRIT Awards, hosted by comedian Peter Kay, will take place on February 16 in London – we can’t wait!
